I want to take my family on a cross country over landing trip. My question is what trail maps should I use. I see you can get some pretty detailed digital maps, for a fee, or I could download and print free USGS topo maps. Any suggestions?

GAIA app is awesome. There is a free version for apple or droid.

I also have the GAIA on my iPad.
It is mounted on a ram mount in the Jeep.
Easy to use and see.

You can make the route online and then it will upload to your device automatically.

The only issue I have had with it, is starting out in an area with no cell signal to initiate the GPS tracking.

U can get a gps dongle to add to ur ipad or iphone one brand is Bad Elf it allows u to use wifi only ipads if u wanting to not get a ipad with cell serivce. So if u have no cell serivce u need one of these to still use the maps.

I've had good luck with Avenza PDF Maps. The app is free for iPhones / iPads and I think they have a Android version. The app has a store where you can download a ton of free maps, used it in Moab, Death Valley, San Diego and even found City maps for a tour in Europe. The best part is that it works and tracks where you're at with the device GPS when you don't have cell service.
